Nice Radio with Couple of Cons, (What's this?) Overall I like this radio. I bought one about 6 months ago on Amazon and payed around $93. I liked it so much that I bought my dad one too.
Pro's
-Super easy setup (I never even looked at the book)
-Excellent/logical menu navigation (this is it's best feature)
-Tons of stations in the menus.
-Decent sound (not as good as tivoli or sangean hi-fi radios)
-Can set up internet to keep clock on time (this is really cool).
-Very good FM reception (don't know about AM)
-Good construction/look/feel
Con's
-Weak wifi reception (This is it's biggest fault)
-Screen difficult to read an any angle other than straight on because the display is set back so far behind the front panel mask. This really affects the practical use as a clock radio. (This is the second biggest fault.)
-Tiny buttons (doesn't really bother me but they are surprisingly tiny.
In general I'm glad I have it but I would like one with a better wi-fi range. My wifi is downstairs and my bedroom is about as far from the wifi router as is possible in this house (Probably 60 ft in a straight line but through walls and floor). I use this particular radio in a room which is closer to the router.
Bad problem, no support, (What's this?) First of all, the setup was not great. The menu structure is convoluted. However, after setup, the radio worked and was apparently OK. However, one time it was turned on and the screen displayed "Network Error." Nothing could make it work after this happened. I had to do a system reset and enter all the information again. However, this was not an isolated event; network errors happened frequently. The radio was about 10 feet from a wifi access point and the signal strength is excellent. The Network is extremely stable; no other wifi devices experienced any problems. Thus it had to be the radio. I checked the Cobra website.
LOVE IT, I absolutely love this radio, set up was easy, sounds great for the price, get all my favourite uk stations. Highly recommended.
Cobra CIR1000A, I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of this radio. It has wonderful sound qualities and really fills up the room. Cobra partners with Frontier Silicon Wireless Portal so that you can create one or many station profiles for different users. You create your profile using an online interface on your computer and the profile is imported on the radio's control panel. It takes a little time to configure for the radio to make use of your wireless network. For example, you have to learn how to use the radio interface to put in your WEP code. Once you're on your wireless network, the radio performs very well. I have no idea what internal wireless adapter Cobra uses but it is certainly sufficient to pull in quality sound anywhere in the house. The radio will also play shared media if you have a network configured.
Stumblefoot, (What's this?) really easy to use, display is a bit small. You can find everything on this! It's awesome. Just be sure you have a wireless router. I do and knew what I was getting.
A great new internet radio from a rather unlikely brand, (What's this?) Since the invention of internet radio, there have been products coming from some noteworthy brands (Logitech and Grace Digital being the frontrunners of all things internet radio). However, the newest internet radio comes from out of left field- from Cobra, of all people.
Some reservations..., (What's this?) This unit, Cobra CIR1000A, set up quickly to my wireless and the sound is remarkably excellent for its size. These are this unit's biggest pluses besides its modest cost. The reservations are these: First, the buttons are tiny, faintly labeled and so are awkward to use and, since there is NO Remote to bypass those pesky buttons, can be frustrating. Second, "Favorites" can be set only by going to the web site called 'frontier' so there is a limited availability compared to other internet radio sites. Also, the list can only be modified by using this site also. Third, the unit has frozen up a couple of times, (lost in 'connecting' mode), requiring me to unplug and replug to 'reboot', so to speak.
I am seriously considering returning the unit but am unsure of alternatives.
Buy one... now., What a great piece of kit.
The instructions were clear and easy to understand, and set up procedure was simple.... even for a techno-baffoon like myself.
Just follow the manual, go on line, enter the code and choose from gazillions of radio stations. They are instantly delivered to the radio (by magic, I think).
And then, just select one and marvel at the outstanding sound quality. I am an ex-pat living in New York, and in the past I used my laptop to listen to BBC Radio 5 live (football & news), Radio 4 (cricket & news)and BBC 6 music (um, music?). But even with a decent laptop, the sound quality was not good.
But with this, you get sound comparable to a Bose.... at a fraction of the price, and with an almost unlimited number of stations.
One, miniscule, pretty insignificant gripe..... perhaps Cobra should have thought about having a small slot in the back for batteries... it needs to be connected to the mains at all times. Although, when you turn it on, it connects and plays within 30 seconds, so it's no big deal.
Excellent price for a perfectly good radio, (What's this?) I already owned a wireless internet radio that cost almost twice the price so I was hesitant to buy one that was so much cheaper. Turns out my fears were unfounded. Both radios are comparable in sound, ease of use and other features. There's nothing wrong with this unit whatsoever.
